The batana is a traditional vessel whose origins trace back to the Po Valley–lagoon navigation culture—a sister of the Venetian gondola, surviving today only in Rovinj. The Casa della Batana Ecomuseum has been recognized by UNESCO as one of the best practices for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage worldwide.
Rovinj’s historic centre sits on a promontory where the old Venetian charm is still tangible—the old town was shaped under the Republic of Venice—topped by the Cathedral of Saint Euphemia and its bell tower, which dominates the skyline. The ecomuseum is housed in a 17th-century building close to the sea.
The most beautiful experience is not the museum—it is the evening batana outing. Departing from the small pier at dusk, you circle the peninsula’s historic core guided by boatmen and bitinaduri—fishermen-singers with guitar and accordion—before arriving at the Spàcio, the traditional fishermen’s tavern, for dinner featuring classic Rovinj dishes.
