Albergo Diffuso Tolmezzo: Stay in the Carnia That Supplied Venice’s Arsenale

Tolmezzo is the capital of Carnia—the mountain region of Friuli that, for centuries, supplied Venice with the timber used to build its ships and drive the wooden piles on which the city still stands. Carnia's beech and fir forests were a strategic resource for the Venetian Republic. The trees were felled in winter, hauled down from the mountains, then floated along the Tagliamento River all the way to the Venetian Lagoon. Without those logs, the galleys of the Arsenale would never have been built. Nor would the palaces lining the Grand Canal.

The concept of the albergo diffuso was born here in Carnia in 1982, as part of a project aimed at giving new life to the homes restored after the 1976 earthquake by turning them into a new form of hospitality. Born here out of necessity, the model has since become a form of hospitality studied and replicated around the world. Tolmezzo is the ideal base for exploring the Carnic forests on foot or by bike, visiting the mountain villages that have remained intact, and following the paths once used by the woodcutters—those who, for generations, supplied Venice with timber.
