Hiša Torkla: the grill that never goes out above Izola

In a 19th-century olive mill among the vineyards of Korte, a signature steakhouse overlooking Slovenian Istria.

Korte, Izola (Slovenia)

In Korte, a hilltop village in the hinterland above Izola, a 19th-century olive mill converted into a restaurant brings together an open-fire grill and the rural soul of Slovenian Istria.

The name Torkla comes from the old olive press that once occupied these spaces—today a restored stone house with an indoor fireplace and a terrace overlooking the hills and vineyards of Korte, in the hinterland above Izola.

Since 2024, the restaurant has been run by a young team led by Andraž Krebelj, who has shifted the focus of the kitchen towards the grill—a “light steakhouse” serving carefully selected Italian and international meats cooked in full view, alongside fish dishes and seasonal local ingredients: asparagus in spring, white truffles in autumn. The cellar works closely with winegrowers from Korte and the surrounding area, while the wine list brings together Slovenian, Italian and French labels.

Recognition from the Michelin Guide followed shortly after the change in management—a sign of continued quality despite the restaurant’s renewed concept.
