Isolana – House of the Sea: the maritime memory of Izola
Where Pietro Coppo, a 16th-century Venetian cartographer, spent his final years drawing maps of Istria.

In the blue building on Alma Vivoda Street, the Isolana museum tells the maritime story of Izola through model boats, photographs and an interactive map of the Parenzana railway—with a room dedicated to the Venetian cartographer Pietro Coppo.
Until the 18th century, Izola was a true island, connected to the mainland by a stone bridge. The Isolana museum, housed in a blue-painted building in the heart of the old town, tells this story through three thematic sections: traditional boatbuilding, with more than thirty models of historic Adriatic vessels crafted by local model makers; cartographic heritage, with a room dedicated to Pietro Coppo, the Venetian cartographer who lived in Izola for many years and created some of the earliest systematic maps of Istria; and the fishing industry, which shaped the city’s work, culture and identity for centuries.
The exhibition is interactive and suitable for families, with a digital map of the Parenzana railway, the chance to “navigate” virtually as a fisherman from the past, and a 3D model showing how Izola has evolved over time. All displays are available in Slovenian, English and Italian.
The museum is also the starting point for “The Forgotten Secret of Izola”, a treasure hunt through the historic centre designed for those who want to explore the town in a different way.
