There is a direct link between the white pebbles of the Tagliamento River and the floors of Venice's palaces. Throughout the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, skilled craftsmen from the Spilimbergo area travelled seasonally to Venice. They gathered pebbles from the Meduna and Tagliamento rivers before heading to the Serenissima to create terrazzo alla veneziana—the distinctive marble-chip floors that became a hallmark of the city's noble palaces.
The Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli was founded in Spilimbergo in 1922, precisely because this area had long been a centre of mosaic and terrazzo craftsmanship. Today, it is recognised as one of the world's leading mosaic schools. Its graduates have gone on to work on landmarks such as the Library of Congress in Washington and the Opéra in Paris.
During your visit, you can watch students at work in the workshops, picking up their hammers and beginning each mosaic by hand. It's one of the most unusual experiences in Friuli—to see a mosaic come to life using the very same techniques that created the floors we still walk across today in the Palazzo Ducale.
