In the heart of Grožnjan, a Venetian fortress from 1358 to 1797, a townhouse built the year after the fall of the Serenissima is now home to six guest rooms and a terrace overlooking the Istrian landscape.
Grožnjan came under Venetian rule in 1358. It remained part of the Republic until 1797, when Napoleon brought the Serenissima to an end. Palazzo Artegnana was built in 1798—the very next year. Whether by coincidence or not, that date embodies the transition of a land that had looked to Venice for more than four centuries.
Today, Grožnjan is home to fewer than 170 residents and remains one of the few municipalities in Istria where Italian is still the majority language. By the 1960s, however, the town was almost deserted. The post-war Istrian exodus had emptied its white-stone streets. In 1965, the abandoned houses were entrusted to Croatian and Slovenian artists, giving the village a second life. Galleries, studios, chamber music festivals and the Grožnjan Jazz Festival gradually followed. Art became the way of preserving what history had nearly allowed to disappear.
Artegnana 1798 sits at the heart of it all—six rooms in a historic townhouse, just a short walk from the Fonticus Gallery and the narrow streets where around forty artists' studios are still open today. Its terrace looks out across the rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves of inland Istria. On clear days, the Adriatic appears on the horizon.
The bistro serves seasonal Istrian cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients. In the evening, just before the village falls quiet again, it's the perfect place to enjoy a glass of Malvasia.
