In the heart of Brda, Šmartno is one of the most beautiful villages in the region, built on Roman foundations and regarded as a true architectural gem. In the first half of the 16th century, a large medieval fortress was constructed here, serving first as a defensive outpost against Ottoman raids and later as a strategic stronghold during the wars between the Republic of Venice and the Habsburg Archduchy.
Hiša Marica is located within the walls of this medieval village. Once a military fortress, it is now a romantic place where time seems to have stood still. The restored old farmhouse takes its name from grandmother Marica, who used to spoil children with simple but excellent dishes.
The restaurant offers traditional cuisine based on seasonal and local ingredients—there is no permanent menu, as it changes every week. Hand-sliced prosciutto and cured meats, Slovenian cheeses, and wines from Brda define the table. In spring and summer, fresh fish from the Soča River is also served.
Meals are served outdoors on a terrace overlooking the cobbled village street, with views stretching over vineyards rolling down toward the Friulian plain and, in the distance, the sea. The property also offers four rooms for those who wish to stay overnight.
