Marano Lagoon: a boat excursion into the forgotten stronghold of the Serenissima Republic of Venice
Reed fishermen’s huts, nature reserves, and a Venetian-style village that tourism has not yet discovered

Marano Lagunare is a small Venetian-style town that has preserved the charm of its traditions intact: the architecture of its buildings, the layout of its streets and squares, its dialect, and its customs all date back to the rule of the Serenissima. A boat excursion is the best way to understand it.
It is a small fishing village where every corner, alley, and square bears witness to centuries of belonging to the Republic of Venice, which ruled here from the 15th to the 18th century. The main square is still called Piazza dei Provveditori—the title of the Venetian officials who governed the mainland territories.
From the port, boat excursions depart through the lagoon channels, with stops at the casoni—ancient dwellings built from reeds and wood, raised above the water, some still inhabited by fishermen. The route continues to the Foci dello Stella Nature Reserve, where herons and flamingos live among the barene. With a bit of luck, you may also encounter the moecanteri—the crab harvesters who collect moeche, crabs during their molting phase.
Silent, far from the tourist routes, and hard to forget.
