Green Istria: from Izola to the hills of Koper

A day that climbs from the coast of Izola into the hills of the hinterland, from a museum preserving Venice’s cartographic legacy to three producers who still work the land according to its natural rhythms.

The Stops

Morning – Isolana, House of the Sea (Izola)

Start in the historic centre, in the blue building that tells Izola’s maritime story and houses the room dedicated to Pietro Coppo.

Mid-morning – Vanja Dujc (Malija)

Head inland through the olive groves of Malija, where Vanja Dujc produces one of Europe’s most highly awarded olive oils. Visits by appointment.

Lunch – Hiša Torkla (Korte)

A few minutes’ drive brings you to Korte, where a 19th-century former olive mill is now home to Hiša Torkla, a restaurant with an open-fire grill, surrounded by the vineyards of Izola’s hinterland."

Afternoon – Rojac Wine (Gažon)

Head down towards Koper to Gažon, where the Rojac family has been growing vines for four centuries. Taste Renero, the red wine already renowned in the days of the Serenissima."

    Practical Information

    The itinerary can easily be completed by car in one day, with a morning departure from Izola recommended.
    From Izola to Malija: around 10 minutes by car, along a hilly road.
    From Malija to Korte: around 15 minutes. Booking your visit to Vanja Dujc in advance is recommended, as visits are by appointment only.
    From Korte to Gažon: around 15–20 minutes towards Koper. Book lunch at Hiša Torkla in advance, especially at weekends.
    Rojac Wine can be reached by following informal directions through the village of Gažon. It is advisable to contact the winery in advance to arrange a time for your visit.
    Total distance: around 25–30 km. The route is also suitable for e-bikes for those who prefer a slower pace, with a few climbs and descents typical of the Istrian hills.
    Recommended period: spring or early autumn, when the weather is mild and the hills are at their greenest. October and November coincide with the olive harvest at Vanja Dujc.
