Livio Felluga: the “map label” wines and an Istrian story in the heart of the Collio
Five generations of a family that has lived through two wars, a shifting border, and 150 years of Friulian winemaking.
Brazzano di Cormons, Gorizia
A family that survived two world wars, witnessed shifting borders around them, and eventually settled on the gentle foothills of the Friuli hills. Livio Felluga’s story is one of the most beautiful in Italian wine.
The family’s love for winemaking began five generations ago in Isola d’Istria, where they produced Refosco and Malvasia. Then came the post-war border changes, the relocation to Friuli, and the decision to start again on the hills of the Collio. In 1956, Livio founded the winery in Brazzano and created an early form of marketing innovation: placing a map of his own hills on the label. Seventy years later, that map is still on every bottle.
They are the so-called “map wines” — Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon — up to Terre Alte, a blend of Pinot Bianco, Friulano and Sauvignon and the flagship of the estate. Wines that speak directly of their terroir, the ponca soil, and the microclimate of the Collio.
The visit to the Abbey of Rosazzo—an ancient site with the oldest ageing cellar in Friuli—is accompanied by a guided tasting. An experience worth the journey on its own.
